What's Considered a "Luxury Watch"?
Similar to philosophical questions like "what is art?" and "what is beauty?", there really is no definition that is agreed upon. Some watch experts believe that the price is what separates an elite timepiece from a standard pocket watch, but that is not always the case. A better way to understand what makes a luxury watch is to identify some universal features that all high-quality luxury watches share:
- Precision: First and foremost, a luxury watch needs to be able to keep accurate time. If a watch cannot reliably keep time, then it does not matter if it's made of the finest materials from the most well-known watchmaking company in the world - it simply does not perform its most essential function and can’t be considered quality or luxury.

Quality of Materials: One of the most reliable indicators of whether or not a watch is "luxury" is determined by the quality of materials used in its construction. Be it a sports watch with a stainless steel case or a gold watch with an incredibly complex mechanism, the quality of the material is essential as these watches are meant to last an incredibly long time.
- Craftsmanship: Including the first two features, the craftsmanship of the watch is what many consider to be the determining factor. There's a reason why decidedly luxury IWC or Rolex watches are so sought after; their craftsmanship is unparalleled and the product is expected to last generations and often become family heirlooms.
- Personal Preference: The final feature may be considered the most important as the watch you choose to wear is ultimately a personal preference. What one person may consider to be a luxury watch may not seem that way to you. Over the years, certain major brands have established themselves as superior watches that are the epitome of luxury and sophistication, but that's not to say that a watch handed down in your family for generations can't be considered a luxury watch.
