A. Lange & Söhne Watches

Considered to be the foundation of the Glashütte watch industry, A. Lange & Söhne watches are the epitome of German fine watchmaking. Well known across the world for their superior components, exceptional complications, and commitment to Glashütte traditionally-steeped horological artistry, these watches are highly sought after. A precious pocket watch from this watchmaker still remains highly coveted among collectors all over the world.

A Brief History of A Lange & Söhne Watches

Dresden watchmaker Ferdinand Adolph Lange laid the cornerstone of Saxony's precision watchmaking industry when he established his manufactory in 1845. As industrialization took hold in Germany, Ferdinand was well-positioned to capitalize on the rise of the railroad industry with his exceptionally precise timepieces, which is why railway-themed motifs continue to appear on A. Lange & Söhne watch. As the demand for his watches grew, Ferdinand decided to expand the company.

Ferdinand's sons Richard Lange and Emil Lange joined their father in 1871 and 1875, respectively, which resulted in the German watchmaker's name changing to its current brand name: "A. Lange & Söhne". The family ran the company together into the 20th century until World War 2 loomed large over Europe. This major event shifted demand from Lange timepieces intended for consumers to wartime manufacturing. Now that the company was working to supply the German war machine, the German workshop became a target for the Allies and it was destroyed near the closing days of the war. In the aftermath, the region fell under Soviet control in East Germany, and the watch industry as a whole was nationalized. The Lange family fled Europe and left behind the A. Lange & Söhne watch brand to fade into the past.

In 1990, Ferdinand Adolph Lange's great-grandson Walter Lange had the courage to relaunch the brand. Today, Lange crafts only a few thousand wristwatches per year, predominantly in gold or platinum. A. Lange & Söhne watches are endowed exclusively with proprietary movements that are lavishly decorated by hand and assembled twice. With 65 manufacture calibers developed since 1994, A. Lange & Söhne has secured a top-tier position in the world of watchmaking.

Notable A. Lange & Söhne Watches

Brand icons such as the LANGE 1 with the first outsize date in a regularly produced wristwatch, and the ZEITWERK with its precisely jumping numerals display, rank among the company's greatest successes. Exceptional complications such as the ZEITWERK MINUTE REPEATER, the TRIPLE SPLIT, and the so-far most complicated model, the GRAND COMPLICATION presented in 2013 in a six-watch limited edition, reflect the manufactory's determination to achieve ever new pinnacles in its tradition-steeped horological artistry. If you're looking for something with an elegantly simplistic look, the SAXONIA watch would fit perfectly in your collection and also comes in the SAXONIA THIN variant for an even sleeker look.
